SPI Mold Standard–Wall Thickness Design

Product structure is undoubtedly the key factor to determine the price of the mold, the realization of a product function has a variety of different design, different design determines the mold manufacturing method is not the same, determine the price of the mold will be different, some structure only need us to pay attention to some design principles, may be able to save a lot of cost.

If we ignore the wall thickness of the product, the appearance problems will be caused by uneven wall thickness of the product design after the mold production and processing: shrinkage, deformation, thick and thin printing, trapped air burning, glue removal difficulty resulting in burr, etc. Therefore, proper wall thickness will reduce the risk of cosmetic defects in plastic parts.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

The thickness of the side wall of any plastic product should be no less than 40% of the adjacent side wall or the main body wall, and no more than 60%. For example, the main body wall thickness of the product is 2mm, and the bone position growing on this surface can achieve 0.8-1.2, which is the best condition.

Choose different plastics, the requirements of its design wall thickness will be different, that is to say, some materials are suitable for thick wall parts, some materials are suitable for thin wall parts, when setting parts wall thickness should consider whether to conform to the recommended thickness range of the selected materials;

Avoid parts geometry, such as long unsupported spans, sharp internal angles, and excessively thick bosses, regardless of wall thickness. Use bone reinforcement where necessary and add fillet to strengthen the product.

Boss wall thickness should also follow the 40-60% wall thickness molding design guidelines to avoid shrinkage.

Uniformity of wall thickness is very important. For example, the material position of the main body of the product is 2mm, and a small area less than 0.8mm will directly appear without excessive passage, which will make it difficult to fill the 0.8mm area, and there will be stress marks at the joints.

At the same time, we also need to pay attention to the product’s draft angle, according to the product’s different height of the appropriate draft angle, not all products have “cavity in 2 degrees, core in 1 degree ” draft angle.

Qualified parts structure design can improve product plasticity, mold manufacturing success rate is higher, but also can avoid a lot of product defects.
